After checking out the Communication Arts Photography Annual (out this month), I’ve been really thinking about creative photography. And how bad I am at it. Making this the perfect time to review Mark Galer’s Photography Foundations for Art & Design. The artistic, creative focus of this book quickly takes you out of the realm of generic photography basics and gets you thinking hard about the meaning behind your shots.
The book is structured like a textbook, complete with activities, assignments, and worksheets, making it function like a course for budding photographers. And while the title mentions “foundations,” only the first few chapters are really devoted to getting your bearings with the camera, lighting, composition, and basic shot techniques. Even if you’re a veteran of these basics, give some of the activities and assignments (like the series of six moving subjects using different shutter speeds) a try—you may discover something new. Plus, you’ll want to get really familiar with the terminology and basic techniques, as they are referenced often later, for example when dealing with the composition and line of a landscape.
After this warm up, we’re quickly introduced to some advanced techniques that get the creative ideas flowing: Self portraiture, distortion, and montage are introduced, along with the usual landscape, still life, and other “typical” subjects. However, none of these are handled in a typical way. Like Galer’s other books, every chapter is brought to life with striking shots from a wide variety of photographers and subjects. The photos alone got me excited about trying some new techniques right now, and the clear language of these chapters made them quick and easy to learn. Throughout these advanced technique chapters, detailed shooting methods are introduced, as well as image editing processes using Photoshop, while retaining a focus on inventiveness and telling a story with images.
The activities and assignments for each technique are what really help the reader bridge the gap from seeing cool examples to actually getting creative with the camera. I find this to be the hardest part of any art or design medium. The creative stimuli offered here help you to get out and take shots you never would have thought of, and hopefully inspire you to come up with your own concepts that build off of the book’s techniques.
The last chunk of the book focuses on photo technology and image editing topics, some of which (like basic camera care, exposure settings, and cropping) might have been helpful earlier on, especially if this book is truly used as a classroom text or followed like a course. Even so, the information is useful as a reference, especially if you’re new to basic correction and retouching in Photoshop. The book wraps up with some helpful info on photo slideshows and file management. All of this is useful, but the real value in this book is in the large Advanced Projects section, filled with all of the techniques, inspiration, and exercises you need to get out there and take creative, meaningful photographs.
